From an early age, we realise that life is not perfect, and the longer we live, the greater this realisation becomes. It is true, the world we live in is by no means, perfect. Some people suffer from famine and natural disasters, people who do wrong unto others, and even we, ourselves, are tempted to make bad decisions once in a while.
This is great news because it means that we can stop pursuing an unrealistic goal of the ‘perfect life’, with a perfect job, perfect family, perfect body and even perfect house. It means we can and should be free to live with our inevitable imperfections. Think about it…
We can build stronger bonds through our weaknesses. When we fully understand that all people are imperfect by nature, we can stop pretending that we have it all together. Instead of keeping up with a facade and building walls upon walls to keep people from seeing your weaknesses, we can begin to live more authentically with one another. In showing others our weakness, we find our greatest commonality and community and work together to overcome that obstacle together.
We can admit to needing some help. Because of our imperfections, we all have blind spots – tendencies that continually trip us up when we are not focused. These weaknesses and deficiencies are often seen by others — others who might thrive in that particular area and can help us to overcome them. But for someone else to be able to assist us, we must first replace our pride with humility and acknowledge that we are not faultless and ask for help, then can we listen and react to the external help well.
We can finally stop chasing for an unhappy perfection.
“Better a diamond with a flaw than a perfectly flawless pebble.”- Confucius
Happiness is not something to be attained when everything around is perfect — it is virtually impossible because ironically, the more you search for perfection, the more you realise how imperfect you are and the more dissatisfied you will be with your life. Find contentment and happiness and joy even in the midst of defect. Happiness is fully available to us today regardless of our circumstances and can be found even from the smallest of things. For those who would like to see the brighter things in life, we have an article on mindfulness, which teaches us to be more aware of things we usually take for granted, allowing us to find thankfulness even in a seemingly difficult situation.
Life is not perfect, but despite so, the show must go on. When we learn to fully embrace both its beauty and its weakness, realise that it is perfectly fine to be imperfect, we create the opportunity to live victoriously no matter how non-ideal the situation is.
