Work, Sleep, Family, Fitness, or Friends? Pick three.

Work, Sleep, Family, Fitness, or Friends? Pick three.

Do you ever feel like you're doing too much yet too little at the same time?

According to Randi Zuckerberg, you can have it all. Just not at all the same time. We don’t live in a perfect world where we can enjoy all five elements entirely on a daily basis. Instead, what we can do is – pick three.

Every day, make a conscious choice of which three you want to prioritize. Zuckerberg calls this the “entrepreneur’s dilemma” in her Twitter post which went viral back in 2011.

Work-life balance has always been a prevalent conundrum, especially with entrepreneurs and young professionals, who have just started working. Every so often, friends and fitness are the first to suffer.

We all have that profound desire to have it all, do it all, and be it all. What we need to learn is to accept that while we can have it all and be it all, it’s just not possible to do it all in one day. We need to accept that in reality, we have to choose what we want to achieve every day. We pick three today, and another three tomorrow.

It’s an imbalance, as Zuckerberg refers to it.

So, instead of focusing on creating that perfect work-life balance, we seek for imbalance. “The quest for balance is universal, but perfect balance is a myth,” she says. Begin your morning by thinking about what needs to be completed today, then prioritize that. Don’t stress about all the other things that you can’t do today. You can do them tomorrow. Different day, different three.

It’s an imbalance, but it creates a perfect balance in the long run.

You can argue that it’s not impossible to fit all five elements in your schedule in one day. We’re not saying you absolutely can’t. The question is – can you do them all effectively and mindfully?

This pick three philosophy extends to just about everyone who faces difficulty in finding the perfect balance.

Seek for imbalance. Pick three each day.
