Each of these legendary motifs has stood the test of time and proven itself to be a classic statement piece on its own. Behind each of William Morris' beloved works behold a story of its own and here are some of our favourites:
Pimpernel
The print exemplifies how Morris’ interest in Japanese design led to the simplification of lines and colours. Only plants coming from the East or ones that would adapt to eastern styles were chosen. Morris was particularly keen on curved acanthus leaves and climber willow, which he used time and time again as backgrounds. The featured text “Love Is Enough” pays tribute to Morris’ many skills as a writer, poet and typographer. It references a poem of the same title written by Morris about how love can overcome one's most depressing experiences. Read the short poem here.
Strawberry Thief
One of our favourites, and perhaps William Morris's most famous design, the Strawberry Thief, features birds that stand out against the botanical flowers. The inspiration came about as Morris sat in his home kitchen at Kelmscott Manor and watched the birds steal his strawberries from under the fruit nets in his garden.
Bachelors Button
In folklore, cornflowers are known as Bachelor’s Buttons as they were worn by young men in love. Inspired by medieval murals, Morris & Co. painted it in the style of medieval fresco with dramatic effect creating a show-stopping swirling leaf design.
Willow Bough
Morris inspirations were often drawn from nature and plants in his gardens. Willow Bough, on the other hand, was inspired by wildflowers and trees which he had seen on country walks. With the ideas he gathered from the simple woodcut representations in 16th-century herbals books where a willow branch is illustrated, the design was born.
