Self-awareness is the ability to see ourselves clearly and objectively through reflection and introspection. Why is this important? For starters, being self-aware allows you to fully understand your capabilities as a person and in return, make sound decisions that would impact your life goals. Reaching self-awareness can also encourage positive self-development and allow us to become a better person than we were ever before.

Self Reflection

Reflecting can be done in multiple ways depending on the character of the person. One simple way to start is by asking yourself a set of questions, some examples include

  • Have I done the things I want to achieve?
  • Am I creating a positive outcome with what I am doing?
  • What can I do to make myself happy?
  • Are there any things I can do to be better?

The critical thing is to go over your thoughts and feelings thoroughly and analyse your behaviour to see if you have met your standards or failed them. By reflecting on your actions, you can pinpoint your improvements and work on them effectively. You can try writing your thoughts in a journal, talking out loud to yourself, or simply sitting quietly and thinking. As long as you are comfortable in your reflection, you will be able to see your self-worth and you cease to seek validation for every action you make.

External Feedback

It is crucial to know ourselves from the inside, but external feedback helps too. Asking your family or close friends about what they think about you can give you a third party’s point of view towards yourself. Have them describe their views on you and see what rings true and what surprises you. Of course, don’t be overly invested in taking an individual’s word, talk to a variety of people to get a comprehensive and extensive view of yourself. Most importantly, be confident in yourself, know what you are capable of and trust your capabilities. You might not be the best at everything but believe that one day you will improve and get there with hard work and determination.

In short, a little extra self-awareness can be of great benefit to anyone with the attitude to improve. It will not only create a positive difference for yourself but the people around you as well.

“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it”

- Lou Holtz

Not forgetting, a healthy body leads to a healthy body. A little self-love goes a long way, before you start working on your mental wellness and goals, make sure that you are taking good care of yourself first. With the help of self-awareness, you will be able to react accordingly to your environment and reach your life goals in no time. Stay motivated and aim to be a better version of yourself every day.
